The Halo Saved Driver Lives
The halo saved its first driver pretty early in its maiden season, at the Barcelona F2 race in 2018. Tadasuke Makino and Nirei Fukuzumi made contact at Turn 4 early in the sprint race, launching the former over the top of his fellow countryman.
Fukuzumi’s Arden collided with Makino’s Russian Time, with the halo taking the brunt of the contact rather than Makino’s helmet as it would have in 2017.
It was only the second F2 race and the fifth grand prix to use the halo, but it had already shown its value by saving a racing driver’s life.
