Reich made NFL history as his 11-game tenure is the shortest tenure for an NFL head coach in the last 45 years and signed a four-year contract in January to help guide the Carolina offense as well as develop Bryce Young, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Despite being fired, the 61-year-old Reich is owed $36 million from Carolina through 2026 and he will make around $25,000 a day from the Panthers for the next three years.

During his entire head coaching career, his two teams combined for a record of 42-50-1 across six seasons including going 1-2-0 in the playoffs in the NFL.

Who Made the Decision?

Panthers owner David Tepper made the decision to fire Reich, along with quarterback coach Josh McCown and assistant head coach/RB coach Duce Staley, less than 24 hours after the team’s Week 12 loss to the Tennessee Titans.

Special teams coordinator Chris Tabor has been appointed as the interim head coach. Reich’s tenure of only 11 games makes it one of the shortest in the NFL over the last 45 years for a head coach who coached a game.

Reich Signed in January?

His four-year contract, signed in January to lead the Carolina offense and mentor Bryce Young, the No. 1 pick of the 2023 NFL Draft, has been cut short. Despite the abrupt end, Reich expressed no ill feelings toward Tepper and acknowledged the meritocratic nature of the NFL.

He will receive $36 million from the Panthers through 2026, equivalent to around $25,000 per day for the next three years. Reich also stated that this marks the likely conclusion of his NFL coaching journey.

Tepper’s decision to fire Reich during the season is the second consecutive year he has taken such action, having parted ways with Matt Rhule in 2022 after Week 5.

The Panthers’ performance throughout the year has been subpar, ranking among the worst in several categories, leading to six consecutive losing seasons since Tepper’s acquisition of the team in 2018 for $2.275 billion.

Reich becomes the second head coach to be fired this season, following the Las Vegas Raiders’ dismissal of Josh McDaniels on October 31.

As a seasoned head coach with significant experience, particularly as a former backup quarterback for the Buffalo Bills, Reich achieved success in his earlier coaching endeavors.
