Tiafoe has 1-0 advantage over Kwon.
The sole previous match between the two took place in the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2021, with the American winning in straight sets.

Prediction

Fourth-seeded Frances Tiafoe will face South Korean Soonwoo Kwon in a match for a place in the 2022 Rakuten Japan Open final.

In the previous two weeks, the American has been in fantastic shape, defeating opponents like Yasutaka Uchiyama and Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the US Open, the Laver Cup, and the current ATP 500 tournament in Tokyo. The American won 6-0, 6-4 over Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the quarterfinals. He failed to break Kecmanovic once during the entire game and was successful in doing so four times.

Soonwoo Kwon had similar brilliance to that of Tiafoe with a 6-3, 6-0 triumph over Pedro Martinez of Spain in his quarterfinal. After breaking his opponent’s serve five times and surviving a break point of his own, the South Korean won the match and moved on to his first quarterfinal of the year. Kwon overcame McKenzie McDonald and Alex de Minaur, the sixth seed, along the way to the quarterfinals.

Thanks to his solid baseline play and flat groundstrokes, Kwon has succeeded throughout the competition. But it’s possible that he lacks the resources necessary to defeat Tiafoe. He will have to step up and take some chances if he wants to stand a chance of participating in the title match.

Based on his form and skills, Tiafoe should be able to defeat the South Korean and move on to the final.
