In the 19th edition of the tournament, the Serbians finished their undefeated 12-match run in a big way. They beat Brazil in three straight sets (26-24, 25-22, and 25-17) to win gold and take their place on the podium again.

Earlier on Saturday, Italy defeated Olympic champions the United States in straight sets (25-20, 25-25, 27-25) to win bronze, their third World Championship medal (they won gold in 2002 and silver in 2018).

With their fourth win over Brazil in 22 international matches, Serbia became only the sixth country to win back-to-back World Cups. They joined the former USSR (1952, 1956, and 1960), Japan (1982 and 1967), China (1982 and 1986), Cuba (1994 and 1998), and Russia (1998 and 2002). (2006, 2010).

Nine players from the team that won the title in 2018 came back to win it again in 2022. They were setter Bojana Drca, opposites Tijana Boskovic and Ana Bjelica, outside hitters Bianka Busa, Brankica Mihajlovic and Bojana Milenkovic, middle blockers Maja Aleksic and Jovana Stevanovic, and libero Teodora Pusic. They were led by head coach Daniele Santarelli.

“I don’t know what to say,” said Boskovic, the team captain. “These women, this team, this spirit… We didn’t lose a single game along the way. I’m so glad and proud to be a part of this group. I want to thank everyone who helped us in the last three weeks, especially my family.

The win also caps a great six years for Serbian women’s volleyball. In that time, the country’s national team has won two world titles, two Olympic medals (silver in Rio 2016 and bronze in Tokyo 2020), two European titles (2017 and 2019), and a bronze medal at the VNL (2022).

In the gold medal match in Apeldoorn, Boskovic led the way with 24 points, all of which came from kills, and Stevanovic was next with 11 points (five kills, four blocks, two aces). With six points, Drca, the setter, also did a great job (three kills, two blocks, one ace).

Europeans Fared Well!

The Europeans won the gold medal match, 50 to 33, because they had more kills, blocks, and aces than Brazil (four to three). Serbia’s performance in the final was so good that their 22 mistakes (compared to Brazil’s 13) didn’t change anything.

The Brazil stars had a slower night, with only three players finishing with nine points: team captain and outside hitter Gabriela “Gabi” Guimaraes (nine kills), middle blocker Ana Carolina “Carol” da Silva (seven kills and two blocks), and opposite Lorenne Teixeira (seven kills, two aces).

With back-to-back block points from Drca and Lozo. The Serbians went up by two points, 16-14, and now have the lead. Brazil came back. And tied the set, but in the end. Europe went back ahead and won 26-24 after Gabi made a mistake on offence.

The Lead Was Taken By Brazil!

Brazil took an early 4-1 lead in the second set thanks to Carol’s first two block points in the final. Gabi scored on a transition play to give Brazil a 9-5 lead. But the Serbians came back with a good run and tied the game at 12 points with a kill from Boskovic.

When Carol Gattaz stopped Boskovic to make the score 16-13, the Brazilians got some breathing room again, but the Europeans then scored seven times in a row to go up 20-16. Two more blocks from Carol brought the Brazilians closer. And an ace from Tainara Santos tied the score at 22-22. The Europeans won the set 25-22 thanks to good play at the end and a block by Stevanovic.
