FIVB Volleyball Men’s Nations League History, Number of Teams, And Format

According to reports, the FIVB said in June 2017 that the World Grand Prix and World League formats would be considerably changed for 2018. Starting in 2018, the World League and World Grand Prix will reportedly only feature one Group of 16 national teams. The FIVB replaced the World League and World Grand Prix with national leagues for men’s and women’s volleyball in October 2017 in a press release. The competition was divided into two rounds, same like the previous World Grand Prix: a preliminary round with a rotating host city system and a final round played in a predetermined host city.

The tournament’s play-by-play structure was altered for 2022 as there will be 2 groups of 8 teams each made up of the 16 teams. Throughout the three weeks of the preliminary round, each country will play 12 matches. Four matches will be played over six days of competition (Tuesday through Sunday) in two pools of eight teams each. A week can pass between events under the new tournament format. There will be 96 matches in all during the pool phase.
