Fathima Beevi, born in Pathanamthitta, Kerala, in April 1927, was a member of the Rowther Family and the child of Annaveettil Meer Sahib and Khadeeja Beevi. After graduating from University College, she pursued her law degree at the Law College in Trivandrum. Commencing her legal career in November 1950 as an advocate, she steadily advanced, achieving the position of a district and sessions judge by 1974. In 1983, she was appointed to the High Court, securing a permanent judgeship a year later. Notably, in 1989, Fathima Beevi made history as the first woman judge in the Supreme Court.
Upon retiring in 1992, Beevi served as a member of the National Human Rights Commission from 1993 to 1997 before assuming the role of Governor of Tamil Nadu until 2001. In this capacity, she declined the mercy petitions submitted by four individuals condemned in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case. These convicts had appealed for clemency under Article 161 of the Constitution, granting the Governor the power to pardon.
Fathima was not married in her entire life and also maintained her distance from her family and friends.
