The group stage action from Pool-C & Pool-D of the FIH Odisha Hockey Men’s World Cup 2023 came to a close on Day 6, with the Netherlands and England winning their groups and securing their spots in the quarterfinals. Meanwhile Malaysia, New Zealand, India, & Spain have settled for their positions in the crossovers after failing to win their respective groups.

In the opening match, Malaysia needed to win to move ahead of New Zealand for second place in the group, while New Zealand only needed a draw to maintain its advantage over Malaysia on goal differential. The game started off with Malaysia scoring the first two goals, but the Kiwis quickly tied the score in the fourth quarter with two goals of their own. However, Malaysia got the last laugh, scoring with two minutes remaining to seal the victory and take second place in Pool C, with New Zealand coming in third. Meanwhile, a new record for the largest victory margin in FIH Men’s Hockey World Cup was achieved by Netherlands, who entered the match in a dangerous attitude and scored 14 goals past the Chilean defense.

Elsewhere in Pool-D, England finished their group campaign with a dominant 4-0 victory, that allowed them to finish ahead of the hosts. Despite controlling possession throughout the match, India were able to secure only 4-2 victory and hence, finished behind England on terms of goal difference. Following the results of Thursday, India have sealed their berth in the cross-over match of 2023 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup against New Zealand.
