In the final between defending champion France and two-time winners Argentina, the later took an early lead through penalty of Lionel Messi before doubling their lead through a stunner from Angel Di Maria in the 35th minute. Despite their best efforts, France failed to score before half-time, as the match entered second-half with comfortable 2-0 lead for Argentina. With only 10 minutes left, fans were assured of Argentina’s victory but, Kylian Mbappé’s quick brace within 97 seconds meant France made it 2-2 and forced the match into extra-time.
During additional time, Messi fired another goal to restore Argentina’s lead before Mbappé’s penalty restored parity at 3-3. After this turn of event, the final went to penalties with Mbappé and Messi taking duty of first penalty and scoring their respective turns.
