This year, India is hosting the event for the first time and also offers players the chance to secure qualification to the next Candidates Tournament.

The FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 had a prize pool of USD 2 million.

FIDE Chess World Cup 2025: format

The FIDE Chess World Cup 2025 features an eight-round knockout format with the top 50 seeded players automatically advancing to round two. Meanwhile, the remaining participants will compete with each other from round one. Each match features two classical games across two days, with players locking horns on a third day for rapid and blitz tiebreakers if the scores are tied. Notably, classical games will have a total of 90 minutes per side for the first 40 moves. This is followed by an additional 30 minutes for the rest of the game and a 30-second increment starting from move one. The two losing semifinalists will then play a separate match to decide the third-place finisher.

The Resort Rio in North Goa is hosting the ongoing tournament, marking India’s first time hosting the World Cup. Aside from serving as the competition venue, it also serves as a player residence and competition hall.
