Dame Mary Quant was born to Welsh parents in London in 1930. She grew up in a time of austerity, but in her designs, she pushed for fun and women’s freedom. In 1955, she started her first store, called Bazaar, on the King’s Road in the Chelsea neighbourhood of London. Her unique addition to British fashion was quickly made clear by how far-sighted and creative she was.

Quant is known for popularising miniskirts and bringing fashion to more people. Dame Mary was one of the most important people in 1960s fashion, and young women everywhere looked up to her. Her logo, a black and white daisy that she made in the 1950s, was on the packaging for her clothes, a cheaper line called the Ginger Group that came out in 1963, tights, and a popular makeup line. She was one of the first people to make a brand out of a fashion name.
A statement from her family said she died peacefully at home in Surrey, UK with her cause of death down to age related ailments. Quant had a net worth of $22 million at the time of her death in April 2023 and most of the wealth was earned through her long and illustrious career in fashion.
Following her parents’ refusal to let her attend a fashion course, Quant studied illustration at Goldsmiths, where she met her husband, the aristocrat Alexander Plunket Greene.
Mary Quant’s legacy recognized with multiple honours from British Monarchy
