95 year old Fali Sam Nariman was born on January 10, 1929, in Rangoon, Burma Province (present-day Yangon, Myanmar). Nariman hailed from a Parsi family. His parents, Sam Bariyamji Nariman and Banoo Nariman, instilled in him a strong foundation of values that guided his journey through life.
He was married to Bapsi F. Nariman since 1955, and the couple had two children, a son named Rohinton Nariman and a daughter. Rohinton Nariman followed in his father’s footsteps and became a Judge of the Supreme Court of India, also serving as the Solicitor General of India from 2011 to 2013. The Nariman family resided in New Delhi, where they shared a deep bond and supported each other’s endeavors.
Nariman’s educational journey commenced at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla, where he received his early schooling. He later pursued his passion for learning by obtaining a degree in Economics and History from St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai.
His academic excellence shone through when he graduated with a law degree (LL.B.) from the Government Law College, Mumbai in 1950, standing first in the examination and being awarded the prestigious Kinlock Forbes Gold Medal and Prize for Roman Law & Jurisprudence.

Fali Sam Nariman career
Fali Sam Nariman embarked on his legal career at the Bombay High Court, where he honed his skills for 22 years before being appointed a Senior Advocate in the Supreme Court of India in 1971. Throughout his illustrious career, Nariman’s contributions to Indian constitutional law were immense.
He served as the Additional Solicitor General of India from May 1972 to June 1975, resigning in the wake of the Declaration of Emergency on June 26, 1975.
Nariman’s legal prowess was showcased in several landmark cases, including his representation of Union Carbide in the infamous Bhopal gas disaster case, where he later acknowledged his initial stance as a mistake and facilitated a settlement between victims and the company outside the court.
He also played a pivotal role in significant cases such as the Supreme Court AoR Association case, addressing the appointment of judges in the Higher Judiciary.
His illustrious career garnered him numerous accolades, including the Padma Vibhushan in 2007 and the Padma Bhushan in 1991, both being among the highest civilian honors in India.
