What is a ‘Sprint Shootout?’

A one-hour practise session will be held on Friday of the 2023 season, followed by ordinary qualifying for the grand prix on Sunday.

As of right moment, just Saturday will be used for the sprint. FP2 will be replaced with a new qualifying round called the “Sprint Shootout” that will determine the starting grid for the sprint race later that day.

With a decreasing time limit (12 minutes for Q1, 10 minutes for Q2, and 8 minutes for Q3), qualifying will be handled as normal.

In the additional Saturday qualifying, teams must use brand-new medium tyres for Q1 and Q2, then switch to softs for Q3.

The changes are intended to make Q3 more unpredictable and to improve the likelihood that pole position will be decided in a one-lap shootout.

How will penalties work?

– First-practice or qualifying grid penalties will be carried over to the race.

– Grid penalties from the Sprint Shootout will be carried over to the sprint race.

– Penalties for the sprint race’s grid will be carried over to the grand prix.
