- Oscar Piastri to McLaren

For the Tuesday test, teams remained at the Yas Marina Circuit to give them a chance to do some final runs with their 2022 vehicles. Deals were made for drivers to switch teams during the test, including two-time world champion Alonso, who raced for the first time with Aston Martin before switching to the brand from Alpine in 2023. Due to his existing contracts with Alpine, Alonso was the first driver to leave the pit lane on Tuesday morning while sporting blank overalls, a camouflage helmet, and an unsponsored car livery.
For Piastri, whose contract dispute with McLaren and Alpine dominated the news over the summer before the F1 Contract Recognition Board ultimately ruled in McLaren’s favour. The Australian left early for McLaren, taking advantage of his first opportunity to drive an F1 car since he told Alpine that he would not be competing for the team in 2017 and ordered the suspension of his testing schedule.
Pierre Gasly, another driver joining their new squad for the test, received permission to pair up with Alpine and wore blank overalls once more for the occasion. Nyck de Vries, his replacement at AlphaTauri, has been loaned to the group by Mercedes for the competition.
Following his acceptance by the team last week, Nico Hulkenberg made his Haas debut today. He completed the entire day of testing in the VF-22 in preparation for his return to Formula One in 2019. Frederik Vesti, who is completing Mercedes’ young driver criteria for the running in the W13, is the lone driver making their F1 session debut today.
Every team will run two cars on Tuesday: one for rookies with a maximum of two Grand Prix appearances, and the other for Pirelli tyre testing, which requires more seasoned drivers.
