Have a look at what are penalty points and how are they used in Formula 1 along with the list in F1 2023
The Austrian Grand Prix was dominated by track limits penalties, and just one driver received additional penalty points for their super licence due to their performance in the race.
Only Nyck de Vries had his previously clean licence tarnished for his incident after running Kevin Magnussen off the road in the heat of a fight. A whopping eight drivers were fined after the race after seven incurred in-race time penalties for persistent track limits violations.
Of all the drivers on the grid, Pierre Gasly still has the most points on his licence. He will aim for a clean weekend at Silverstone the next time to lose three points after a year in which he has come dangerously close to receiving a race suspension.
F1 2023 penalty points full list and penalties reason explained
With 12 points on their FIA super licence over a year, a driver will be disqualified from one race under Formula 1’s penalty point system, which is designed to manage driver behaviour similar to other road users. Driver transgressions result in penalty points, the number of which varies depending on how serious the incident was; however, when a year has passed since the offence, the points are erased, so drivers must be careful to stay under the dangerous 12-point limit.
Several drivers have spotless driving records and clean licenses as they continue their heavenly run. These include Logan Sargeant and Oscar Piastri, two of the three rookie drivers, as well as Valtteri Bottas and Lewis Hamilton. A look at how 20 drivers sit after the 2023 Austrian Grand Prix.
