Why Real Madrid and Barcelona are banned from using the term El Clasico?
FC Barcelona and Real Madrid, two of the biggest clubs in Spanish football, engage in intense football matches every year. This match is famous by the name of “El Clasico” and fans have used the term globally to hype this tie. However, neither of the eternal rivals will be able to use the term going forward for commercial purposes because the Spanish Patent & Trademark Office rejected a request to protect/trademark the phrase.
The Spanish Patent & Trademark Office issued its decision because it believes there is a likelihood of misunderstanding between the trademark requested by the Spanish giants and La Liga’s ElClásico slogan, which is considered sufficiently established. They claimed that the “El Clasico” brand is too close to the other La Liga phrase and could be mistaken for it.
