Kohli’s fans called for a boycott of Dainik Jagran and even went as far as burning copies of the publication when it released an article discussing Kohli’s batting approach during the ongoing World Cup.
Explained why are Virat Kohli fans trending boycott Dainik Jagran on Twitter after comments by journalist
What’s in the Article?
In the article, penned by journalist Abhishek Tripathi for Dainik Jagran, Kohli received criticism while Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Indian cricket team, was praised.
The article, titled ‘Shatak Par Ravaiyaa alag alag’ (two different perspectives on centuries), asserted that Kohli placed more emphasis on achieving individual centuries, whereas Rohit Sharma was lauded for his approach of playing for the Indian team and focusing on big shots.
India had won six consecutive cricket matches in the 2023 World Cup season and was heading towards the semi-finals under the leadership of Rohit Sharma. The team’s performance had been consistently impressive.
However, the comparisons between the former captain, Virat Kohli, and the current captain in all formats, Rohit Sharma, had deeply upset Kohli’s fans. On October 30th, these fans burned copies of the Dainik Jagran newspaper and shared videos of the act on social media, using a trending hashtag to express their dissatisfaction with Dainik Jagran’s coverage.
Article Discussed Kohli’s Centuries Pursuit
The journalist’s article discussed Virat Kohli’s pursuit of centuries during the six matches, implying that Kohli was primarily focused on achieving a century and prioritised personal milestones over team goals.
This portrayal in Dainik Jagran infuriated Kohli’s supporters, who not only voiced their discontent but also directed derogatory remarks at the reporter and the media outlet. Subsequently, the sports editor at Dainik Jagran, Abhishek Tripathi, posted a sarcastic tweet targeting the cricketer’s fans, mentioning the impending winter season and suggesting that the fans might become less vocal.
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir also commended Rohit Sharma and indirectly criticized Virat Kohli for his approach to centuries. Gambhir emphasized that Rohit played selflessly for the team, without obsessing over personal milestones like centuries.
Virat Kohli’s Achievement
He stressed the distinction between playing for India’s success and playing with the sole aim of achieving centuries. Kohli is widely acknowledged as one of the greatest batsmen in the history of cricket. He was recognized by the International Cricket Council as the male cricketer of the decade in 2020.
Kohli had a pivotal role in India’s achievements, serving as the team’s captain from 2014 to 2022 and leading them to World Cup victory in 2011 and Champions Trophy success in 2013. He is among the select few Indian cricketers with over 500 matches for the national team and ranks as the fourth-highest run-scorer in international cricket, with the second-highest number of international centuries.
