A look at the meaning of Blaccent and AAVE after Awkwafina quit Twitter over the brouhaha over her viral videos
Nora Lum or Awkwafina as she likes to be known as gone onto pack her bags and head for the exit door on Twitter after the gargantuan outcry which erupted over her Blaccent and AAVE videos.
Awkwafina who has won the Golden Globe was lambasted for using blaccent across the course of her career in the aftermath of her being nominated for an NAACP Image Award for her ‘Outstanding Character Voice-Over Performance’ which traditionally honours people from the black community.
Taking to Twitter to write about the videos, Awkwafina issued a half assed apology, one where she spoke about how she would be leaving the ingrown toenail which Twitter had become whilst she would continue to feature on other social media platforms.
Explained What Is The Meaning Of Blaccent And AAVE
Both her apology and videos have not been taken to kindly by the black community who have been miffed over the manner in which she has belittled them. Blaccent is a combination of two words, black and accent which is used to refer to when a non-Black person uses Black English in the African-American Vernacular English (AAVE).
“In life, linguistic acculturation, immigrant acculturation, and the inevitable passage of globalised internet slang all play a factor in the fine line between offence and pop culture. But as a non-black POC, I stand by the fact that I will always listen and work tirelessly to understand the history and context of AAVE, what is deemed appropriate or backwards toward the progress of ANY and EVERY marginalised group.
“To mock, belittle, or to be unkind in any way possible at the expense of others is: Simply. Not. My. Nature. It never has, and it never was,” Awkwafina wrote.
