What is Mankading?

Mankading is a way of dismissing the non-striker when he is moving out of the crease before the ball is released from the bowler’s hand. The bowler has full right to Mankading the player and it will be given as runout according to the new rules of ICC.

The latest incident is from India Women’s vs England Women’s 3 matches one-day series. In the 3rd ODI at Lords at a very crucial stage of the match Deepti Sharma Mankad England’s Charlie Dean. The English batter almost took the game away from India before Deepti did a cheeky run-out to finish the game for India.

The England cricketers find it very disgraceful and none of them were in the support of a controversial run-out.

Where England cricketers were calling the act shamefully on the other hand Indian players were praising Deepti for pulling off a cheeky run-out. Virendra Sehwag, Wasim Jaffer, and Harsha Bhogle were criticizing the English players who were calling Mankad a disgraceful act.

Harsh Bhogle tweeted”Imagine a World Cup final. 1 to level scores. Non-striker charges down for a single and is in by a quarter of an inch. Suppose it turns out that she had left the crease before the ball was bowled. Would that be fair? Would running less to win be in the spirit of the game?

What was the Mankad Law before 2019

The MCC has been the main jury of making the cricket laws and they have made several changes in the Mankading law over the years. In 2017 code ‘ Bowler can attempt the run-out only before he lands his back foot in delivery stride’.  Which meant the non-striker is eligible to move once the bowler lands his back foot during the time of release.

According to the new rules of ICC, the bowler is eligible to run the non-striker out at any point of his delivery stride before the release.
