The murder of Umesh Pal, a key witness in the 2005 assassination of Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) MLA Raju Pal in Prayagraj, has sparked political outrage.
Lawyer Umesh Pal, 43, was fatally murdered on February 24 in the late hours at his home in Prayagraj’s Sulem Sarai neighborhood. According to police, the attackers assaulted him with rudimentary explosives while also firing a number of shots.

Two of Pal’s bodyguards were hurt in the incident, and one of them, Sandeep Nishad, died from gunshot wounds. Despite the fact that the assailants who murdered Umesh are not known, people are alleging that he was gangster-turned-politician Atique Ahmed’s deed.

Who is Atique Ahmed?
Atique Ahmed is a notorious Indian gangster turned politician. He has been in the news because his name was cropped in the assassination of Umesh Pal.
He was born on August 10, 1962, in Allahabad, Uttar Pradesh, India. His father’s name is Haji Firoz Ahmad while his mother’s name is unknown. He also has a brother named Khalid Azeem Ashraf.
He married Shaista Parveen in 1996. They are parents of five sons. He is currently 60 years old.
Former MLA and younger brother of former MP Atiq Ahmad, Khalid Azeem aka Ashraf, was arrested by the police in Uttar Pradesh in Prayagraj in 2020.
Atiq’s son Umar who is eldest among his five siblings and surrendered before the special CBI court in Lucknow in 2022. With his surrender, Atiq and three other members of his family are now behind the bars and they are being kept at different jails.
Atiq Ahmed tried his luck against PM Narendra Modi from Varanasi seat in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, but got only 855 votes and during the 2019 elections, Atiq Ahmed had also handed over the details of his property and criminal record. Atiq told that he is eighth pass. In the year 1979, appeared for the tenth examination, but could not pass.
Ahmed had told in the 2019 election affidavit that he has a total property of more than 25 crores (25,50,20,529). In which there were movable assets worth Rs 1,80,20,315 in his name and movable assets worth Rs 81,32,946 in the name of his wife Shaista Parveen and from this, immovable assets worth more than 19 crores (19,65,98,500) were or were, which include agricultural land, residential buildings etc. The CM Yogi lead UP government has run bulldozers on many of Atiq’s properties in recent times due to them being illegal.
Shaista is also very fond of jewellery and Atiq had told that his wife had about 1.2 kg of gold ornaments and 3810 grams of silver ornaments. The total cost of which was mentioned as 54,21,450 and Atiq had half a dozen luxury vehicles which included Pajero, Toyota Land Cruiser, Mahindra Jeep and Gypsy. Atiq had told in 2019 that a total of 59 cases are pending against him, however, according to the latest reports, now the number of cases on Atiq has increased to around 70.
His career
Atique Ahmed was elected to the legislative assembly from the Allahabad West constituency for a record-breaking five times in a row. He served as a Samajwadi Party representative for the 14th Lok Sabha from Phulpur in Uttar Pradesh from 2004 to 2009. He presided over the Apna Dal as president between 1999 and 2003.
Together with this, he worked as a builder, contractor, and real estate broker. Nevertheless, he has had a contentious career. Simultaneously with all these things, he was also accused of bombing, murder, extortion, torture, etc. He is currently in jail.
