Shanti Bhushan with his son Prashant Bhushan was featured at the 74th position in the list of most powerful Indians published by The Indian Express in early 2009. His other children are Shalini, Jayant and Shefali. He attended Ewing Christian School in Uttar Pradesh. He was married to Usha Bhushan.
He died Tuesday at his home in Delhi following a brief illness, a source close to his family said.
Shanti Bhushan professional career
Bhushan was an active member of the Congress party and later on of the Janata Party. He was a member of the Rajya Sabha from the 14th of July 1977 till the 2nd of April 1980 and held the office of Union Law Minister in the Morarji Desai ministry from 1977 to 1979. As the Law minister, he introduced the Forty-fourth Amendment of the Constitution of India which repealed many provisions of the Forty-second Amendment of the Constitution of India passed by the Indira Gandhi ministry.
He joined the Bhartiya Janata Party in early 1980. In 1986, Bhushan resigned from BJP after the party acted against their advice over an election petition. Bhushan represented Raj Narain in a case that was filed against Indira Gandhi, the Prime Minister of India. Justice Jagmohan Lal Sinha judged Indira Gandhi guilty and then announced the election to the Lok Sabha void. This decision resulted in widespread political protests and ultimately resulted in the declaration of a state of emergency in India.
Shanti Bhushan was a part of the counsel of the former Prime Minister of India and H. D. He represented Rajendra Singh Lodha regarding assets of the Birla Corporation. He has represented the V.S. Achuthanandan in Supreme Court in the Idamalayar Dam corruption case against the UDF leader R. Balakrishna Pillai and others. The bench awarded rigorous imprisonment for one year with a fine of Rs. 10,000/- each to the accused persons.
