Goodison Park has a lot of history behind it, and it has hosted famous matches such as Everton’s UEFA Cup victory over Bayern Munich back in 1985.
Although the decision to move almost backfired this season, after the club suffered a relegation battle, the Toffees have managed to overcome that obstacle and are now preparing for the eventual move.
Reason behind Everton moving stadiums
Just like all other stadium moves, the reason behind Everton moving to a new stadium stems from expected financial benefits.
During an interview with SportsPro, Alexander ‘Sasha’ Ryazantsev, the former Everton finance and commercial officer revealed:
The new stadium will give us more general admission seats and more hospitality, and it will also attract better partnership deals and enhance commercial revenues.”
“But most importantly, the new stadium will give our supporters a better experience and make them feel proud and excited in an iconic setting on the Liverpool waterfront.”
Everton new stadium capacity
According to reports, Everton’s new stadium will have an expected capacity of around 52,888, seats. This is significantly higher than their current stadium, Goodison Park. It will also become the seventh largest stadium in the Premier League, below Liverpool and above Newcastle United.
New Everton stadium name
Everton haven’t currently secured any sponsorships for the naming rights of the ground. As such, the project is currently being called as the Everton Stadium. However, the club are on the loout for potential sponsorships together with Elevate Sports Ventures.
New Everton stadium location
Bramley-Moore Dock, which is on the banks of the River Mersey, will serve as the location for the new Everton home ground. The new location is only just a little over two miles away Goodison Park. This means that it will still remain close to their fierce rivals Liverpool’s Anfield.
New stadium construction cost
Everton signed a main construction contract with Laing O’Rourke for their new stadium. According to the deal, the company will complete all the works for the new stadium at a locked cost. This will prevent the final bill from going up any further.
The construction costs or the final bill stated on the deal comes to around £500 million, which is quite hefty. It was also the main concern when Everton were facing a possible relegation from the Premier League.
New Everton stadium design
Ahead of the completion of the new stadium, the club released a virtual fly-through video. The video reveals the final designs of the new upcoming stadium. The design for the stadium features a classy, sleek bowl-shaped exterior, which is common for modern stadiums. The stadium will also feature iconic additions like a distinct barrel-shaped roof. Several social areas like restaurants and football pitches will be placed in and around the ground.
New Everton stadium progress
Earlier reports indicated that the construction of the new ground is behind schedule. One expert even claimed that the “project is currently 10 to 12 weeks behind”. However, Colin Chong, who is the chief stadium development officer, stated that that stadium’s construction progress will
slow down externally, although internally it’s going to be a hive of activity. In real terms, the fit-out is starting in January, when we will start putting all the wires and piping in. People won’t notice it as much, as it’s internal, but it’s equally as important to the stadium development as the roof going up.”
New Everton stadium expected opening date
Currently, there is some debate regarding the expected opening date of the new stadium. However, most estimates suggest that the new stadium will finish ahead of the start of the 2024/25 campaign. The Toffees are however, prepared for any possible delays and a mid-season move as well.
