Since 1989, the European Open has sometimes been replaced by the professional ranking event known as the European Masters. Prior to being cancelled, it was known as the Malta Cup and, from 2005 to 2008, served as the only ranking event held outside of the British Isles in Europe. The competition was revived and given the name European Masters in 2016.

History of European Masters Snooker & Current Format

The European Open, which was sponsored by ICI and held in 1988 in Deauville, France, was the inaugural competition in Europe. The Malta Grand Prix served as the sole continental European ranking event in the 1999–2000 season, and there was none for the first time in 13 seasons in 2000–2001.

The first ranking tournament where no English player advanced past the quarterfinals came in 2006. In 2007/2008, it changed to an invitation-only event, however it was then abandoned. It was announced in 2016 that the competition would return to Romania for the following three years under the moniker European Masters.

Current format of the competition features 64 snooker players, who compete in the knockout tournament for the title. All the matches up to quarterfinal of European Masters feature best of 9 frames matches while the semi-final is played in a best of 11 format. For the 2022-23 season of European Masters, the tournament final will be settled by a best of 17 frames match.
