Ellen Rona Barkin is an American actress and producer. She was born in The Bronx, New York as the daughter of Evelyn (née Rozin), a hospital administrator who worked at Jamaica Hospital, and Sol Barkin, a chemical salesman. Her family came from Siberia and the Belarusian-Polish border as Jewish immigrants.

Barkin attended Parsons Junior High School in Flushing, New York. She graduated from Manhattan’s High School of Performing Arts with a high school diploma. She went on to Hunter College, where she studied history and acting.

Barkin intended to teach ancient history at one time. She continued her acting training at the Actors Studio in New York City. She spent ten years studying acting before earning her first audition, according to Time.
