Prediction

On Friday, October 7th, the 2022 Ostrava Open quarterfinal matchup pits World Number 26 Elena Rybakina against World Number 20 Petra Kvitova. The two are scheduled to face each other for the very first time.

The Kazakh tennis player returned to competitive play after winning the Wimbledon with a 4-4 win-loss record, which presented its obstacles for Rybakina. Since then, Rybakina has managed to go to the Slovenia Open final where she was defeated by Katerina Siniakova, but she also lost last week in Tokyo in the opening round to Liudmilla Samsonova. Samsonova has been able to defeat each of her first two opponents in three sets, overcoming a set down in both of those matches to prevail.

After defeating Madison Keys in three sets in the opening round, Rybakina defeated Aliaksandra Sasnovich 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5 in two hours and 34 minutes to advance to the quarterfinals once more.

Paula Badosa climbed to the second spot in the world rankings and is now ranked fourth on the WTA ratings. A second-favourite going into her match versus Kvitova in the second round due to her recent form, the Czech player lived up to the 3/5 odds to win today. In a match that lasted just over two hours, Kvitova defeated the Spaniard 7-6 (4), 6-4.

In the second set, the two players split serve breaks to square the match at 3-3 after Kvitova had saved five break points in the opening set and went on to win the tiebreaker that followed. Following that, the Eastbourne International champion and Cincinnati Open semifinalist triumphed thanks to a significant break in the seventh game of the second set. Kvitova defeated the other Wimbledon champion by winning her eighth match point.

Rybakina is the slight favourite to win the match, but it can be anticipated for Kvitova to regain her composure and use her experience to eliminate Rybakina.
