Head To Head: 2-1

The head-to-head matchup favours Rybakina 2-1 over Muguruza. She overthrew Muguruza in straight sets in the Western & Southern Open this year.

Prediction

In the opening round of the 2022 San Diego Open, current champion Elena Rybakina will face off against 2017 champion Garbine Muguruza in a meeting of two Wimbledon champions.

Rybakina’s second-place finish at the Adelaide International gave the season a strong start. After that, she was forced to withdraw from her second matches at the Australian Open and the St. Petersburg Open, respectively, due to injury, which halted her development. Rybakina’s second-best result came at the BNP Paribas Open, where she made it to the quarterfinals. Her results after that were quite average.

During the two Wimbledon warm-up tournaments, she was only able to win one match on grass. However, the Kazakh overcame Ons Jabeur to win her first Grand Slam trophy at the All England Club. Since her Wimbledon performance, she has been inconsistent. She reached the Slovenia Open final before losing in the first round of the US Open. This was followed by another early exit from the Pan Pacific Open. She just competed in the Ostrava Open semifinals, and she is now in San Diego.

On the other hand, Muguruza has had a terrible year thus far, as evidenced by her 12-16 win-loss record. Only twice this season, once at the Qatar Open in February and most recently at the US Open, has she been able to win two straight games. Despite Muguruza’s good performance in the US Open, Petra Kvitova defeated Muguruza in the tie-break of the final set. Later, she took a flight to Tokyo to compete in the Pan Pacific Open. She had a first-round bye and won in straight sets against Despina Papamichail to get to the quarterfinals. Later, Liudmila Samsonova, the competition’s victor, defeated her.

Rybakina is very confident about her chances going into this competition. She performed admirably in Ostrava, defeating Madison Keys and Petra Kvitova before falling to up-and-coming player Barbora Krejcikova. The Kazakh maintained excellent service throughout the contest and is currently leading the WTA rankings for most aces delivered this calendar year.

The pick of the March is Rybakina looking at her current situation.
