Ela Bhatt was an Indian cooperative organizer, an activist and a Gandhian who launched the Self-Employed Women’s Association of India (SEWA) in 1972. She also served as its general secretary from 1972 to 1996.

Ela Bhatt Achievements, Education, And Family
Ela Bhatt was the chancellor of the Gujarat Vidyapith from the 7th of March 2015 till the 19th of October 2022. She was a lawyer and Bhatt was a part of the international labor, cooperative, women, and micro-finance movements and also achieved numerous national and international awards including the Ramon Magsaysay Award in 1977, the Right Livelihood Award in 1984 for “helping out the home-based producers to organize their welfare and self-respect” and the Padma Bhushan in 1986.
Later on after establishing her career, Ela Bhatt married Ramesh Bhatt in 1956 and the couple had 2 children together namely Amimayi in 1958 and Mihir 1959. She attended L.A. Shah Law College.
Ela Bhatt Professional Career
Ela Bhatt started her career by teaching English for a short time at SNDT University of women which is based in Mumbai, India. In 1955 Ela joined the legal department of the Textile Labour Association which is situated in Ahmedabad, Gujrat.
On the 18th of July in 2007 Nelson Mandela, Graca Machel, and Desmond Tutu convened a Squad of world leaders for contributing for their wisdom, independent leadership and integrity to manage the world’s toughest problems. Nelson Mandela declared the formation of this new group named All Elders in a speech Mandela delivered on the occasion of his 89th birthday.
Ela was particularly involved in this, the Elders’ initiative on equality for women and girls, including child marriage issues. In February of 2012 Bhatt then went to Bihar, India with her fellow Elder Desmond Tutu, Gro Harlem Brundtland and Mary Robinson. They all together visited Jagriti which was a youth-led project aimed at preventing child marriage and influencing the state government’s efforts to tackle this problem.
Ela also traveled to the Middle East with all groups of Elders in August of 2009 and October in 2010. In a blog post written for The Elders’ website following the group’s visit to Gaza in October of 2010, she gave a statement “more hard work than fighting” and that “it is the coward who uses the weapons.”
