Joe O’Connor, the 37th-ranked player in the world, defeated top seed Mark Allen 6-3 in Wolverhampton to make the most of his close qualification for this week’s Duelbits Players Championship. O’Connor barely made it into this week’s premier event by defeating three-time World Champion Mark Williams by £500 because only the top 16 players of the season were given spots.

O’Connor got off to a fast start this evening by going up 3-0 thanks to breaks of 63 & 64. With the score 3-1 and the session halfway through, Allen shown grit and blasted in 85 to stay in the game. O’Connor reasserted his dominance when play restarted and increased his lead to 4-1. But Allen quickly came back with a run of 91 to recover another frame. After a magnificent break of 132 to make it 5-2, O’Connor brought himself to the brink of victory. Allen took the eighth, but O’Connor stole the ninth on the colors after a clearance of 45 to win 6-3. In the quarterfinals, O’Connor will now play either Luca Brecel or Jack Lisowski.
On the opposite table, second-seeded Ryan Day defeated recently-crowned Shoot Out champion Chris Wakelin with a commanding 6-2 victory. Thanks to his break of 103 this evening, the Welshman completely outclassed his rival. Day’s next opponent will be either Mark Selby or Shaun Murphy in the quarterfinal stage.

2023 Players Championship: prize money distribution
From the $385,000 total prize pool, it is known that the Players Championship winner will get £125,000 in reward. The second-place finisher in the competition will receive £50,000 as opposed to each semi-final loser’s £30,000 award. After their catastrophic loss in the first round, Mark Allen and Chris Wakelin will get £10,000 in prize money.
