Randy had previously played in the Guess Who, a legendary Winnipeg rock band, with Chad Allan. After the departure of Allan in 1973, the band formally changed their name to Bachman-Turner Overdrive and produced two albums under the name Brave Belt in 1971 and 1972.
In 1973, Bachman-Turner Overdrive published their self-titled debut album, which peaked at No. 9 on the Canadian charts and No. 70 on the Billboard rock chart. However, the band’s major breakthrough came with the publication of its follow-up that same year.

Roll on Down the Highway, written by Robbie and Fred Turner, helped propel the band into the mainstream with the release of their third album, Not Fragile. Despite its humble beginnings as a car commercial jingle, the song went on to become one of the band’s most popular successes, peaking at number 22 on the UK singles chart, number 14 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 4 in Canada.

Robbie Bachman did not rebound after the split
Bachman-Turner Overdrive split up for a while after their Rock N’ Roll Nights album came out in 1979, only to get back together in 1983. However, Robbie decided not to join the new lineup because of management differences with Randy.
Bachman-Turner Overdrive kept using the name, so Robbie and Blair Thornton filed a trademark infringement suit, which resulted in payments being paid to the original band members. In 1988, during the band’s Not Fragile iteration, Robbie came back for a short reunion. The Canadian Music Hall of Fame inducted Bachman-Turner Overdrive in 2014.
