He was born on 29 December 1928 in the Derker area of Oldham, Lancashire, England. His father was World War I veteran John Edward Cribbins and his mother was cotton weaver Ethel. He also had two siblings.

Cribbins met aspiring actress Gillian McBarnet. From 1955 till her passing on October 11, 2021, they were happily married. They didn’t have kids and resided in Weybridge, Surrey. He receivedย a prostate cancer diagnosis in 2009.

He died when he was 93 years old.

At the age of 13, Bernard Cribbins stopped attending school and went to work as an assistant stage manager at a local theatre club, where he also had a few tiny roles.

Later, he completed an apprenticeship at the Oldham Repertory Theatre. He started his national service in 1947 in Mandatory Palestine and Aldershot, Hampshire, with the Parachute Regiment.
