Local officials responded when the aide of Jeff Baena discovered him dead in his Los Angeles-area home on Friday morning.

The details of his death have not been made public, but police came around 10:30 a.m. to start a death investigation with the director and writer having committed suicide.
Jeff Baena was born on June 29, 1977. Jeff was between 5ft 9in to 6ft in height. He was raised in Miami in a nonreligious Jewish household. Since 2011, he and actress Aubrey Plaza had been together. On the tenth anniversary of their relationship, they got married in a modest ceremony in their backyard in 2021.
Baena relocated to Los Angeles to pursue directing after earning a degree in film from the New York University Tisch School of the Arts. He started working on several films as Robert Zemeckis’ production assistant.

At the age of 47, Jeff Baena passed away on January 3, 2025. He was declared dead at the scene after an aide found his body at a residence in the Los Angeles region. According to reports, a suicide was the reason of death.
He is survived by Plaza, his brother Brad Baena, his stepsiblings Bianca Gabay and Jed Fluxman, his mother Barbara Stern, his stepfather Roger Stern, his father Scott Baena, and his stepmother Michele Baena.

Jeff Baena worked with Zemeckis before joining writer-director David O. Russell as an assistant editor. One of Baena’s eyes was hurt in a minor vehicle accident after they had been working together for a year and a half. Russell directed I Heart Huckabees in 2004 and it was one of those four scripts.
Baena started concentrating on writing at the same time, and he penned the zombie comedy Life After Beth, which would become his first feature film as a filmmaker. Joshy was supposed to be Baena’s directing debut, but actor and co-director Adam Pally had to withdraw due to personal circumstances.
In January 2020, the Sundance Film Festival hosted the global premiere of Baena’s film Horse Girl, which he co-wrote with Alison Brie. While the net worth of the 47 year old director isn’t known, his wife Aubrey is worth $8 million.
