The 26-year-old goalkeeper tragically passed away following a sudden and short illness. Reports suggests that on June 15, 2024, Sarkic collapsed at an apartment in Budva.

Despite his friends calling for an ambulance and police, he was pronounced dead around 6:30 am local time. Nothing else has been revealed about the nature of his death or illness. While some speculated online that the goalkeeper had suffered a heart attack due to taking the Covid vaccine, Sarkic’s vaccincation status isn’t known with these being rumors only. Matija was a Christian by religion.

Club Release Statement

In their statement, the Championship club asked for the privacy for Matija Sarkic’s family. “Millwall Football Club is completely devastated to announce that Matija Sarkic has passed away at the age of 26,” the Championship club stated.

Aston Villa also took to their official X handle and expressed condolences to Sarkic’s family.

About Matija Sarkic

For the unversed, Matija Sarkic, born on July 23 1997, was a professional footballer who played as a goalkeeper. Standing at 6 ft 4 in (1.94 m), Sarkic, born in Grimsby, Lincolnshire, began his career in Anderlecht’s academy before joining Aston Villa in 2015.

Bojan Sarkic, Sarkic’s father, is a Montenegrin diplomat, who currently serves as the Ambassador to the European Union. Bojan Saekic previously worked as a Ambassador to the United Kingdom and Belgium.

His mother, Natalie Sarkic-Todd, is British and works at a European media network. Matija had a twin brother, Oliver, with whom he played during his time at Anderlecht.

Career

Sarkic had loan spells at Wigan, Stratford, Havant and Waterlooville, and Livingston before transferring to Wolves in 2020.

During subsequent loan periods at Shrewsbury, Birmingham, and Stoke, he played 60 games before joining Millwall last August, where he made 33 appearances.

He debuted for Montenegro against Belarus in 2019 and was on international duty last week for a friendly match against Belgium.
