Devasahayam Pillai will become India’s first common person to become a Christian saint after the procedure is completed. Since then, lots of people are talking about him: So, let’s find out more about him and he deserved this title:

Who Was Devasahayam Pillai?

On April 23, 1712, Devasahayam Pillai was born as Neelakandan Pillai to a Hindu Nair family in Nattalam, Kanyakumari district. His father was Vasudevan Namputhiri, a Brahmin, and his mother Devaki Amma of the Nair Caste. Pillai married Bhargaviammal of the village of Mekkodu, near Eraniel, belonging to his own caste.

Devasahayam Pillai began his career as an official in the palace of Maharaja Marthanda Varma, King of Travancore, when he was inspired by Captain Eustachius De Lannoy, a Dutch naval officer who brought him to the Catholic religion in 1975.

He took the Christian name ‘Lazarus’ in the local tongue after converting to Christianity, which translates ‘God is my help.’

He advocated equality for all people regardless of caste boundaries when preaching religion, which sparked hostility among the upper classes, and he was jailed in 1749. Devasahayam Pillai was martyred on the 14th of January 1752, after facing growing difficulties.

He died on the 14th of January 1752, at the age of 39 years. His dead remains were placed near the altar from what is now the diocesan Cathedral, St. Xavier’s Church, Kottar, Nagercoil.

After a lengthy procedure, the Vatican recognised his martyrdom after his death. On December 2, 2012, 300 years after his birth, he was blessed at Kottar.

Why Vatican Recognized Him As Saint?

Only when a woman in her 7th month of pregnancy attested to a “miracle” after praying to Devasahayam, he was elevated to sainthood in 2013.

Her foetus was ruled “medically dead” since there was no movement, according to the woman. But it was only “after praying to the martyr” that she felt the baby move.

Following that, the Vatican agreed and declared Devasahayam a saint.
