Prediction
On Friday, October 7th, the 2022 Japan Open quarterfinal will be held between World Number 22 Denis Shapovalov and World Number 28 Borna Coric.
Rio Noguchi, who was ranked 291st, was the opponent Shapovalov faced in the second round. Shapovalov performed as expected. In a match that lasted just 58 minutes, the Canadian defeated his Japanese opponent 6-3, 6-1. Shapovalov had defeated Steve Johnson in straight sets in the previous round.
Shapovalov did not come up against a break point during the entire set, smashing five aces and winning 81% of his first serve points. Not even one of his service games reached the final two. And with two serve breaks in the first set and two more in the second, Shapovalov easily advanced into the quarterfinals for the second consecutive tournament.
With both players starting out 10/11 to win, Coric and Brandon Nakashima, his opponent in the second round, had nothing to differentiate them heading into their match. It appeared that way during the opening 10 games of the match as well, with neither player facing a break-point and both players hanging on to their serves with ease.
The set was won by Coric in the 11th game when he first broke his foe and then served it out to 15 to take the match. Soon after, in the second set, another break occurred. From that point on, there was no turning back for Coric. Following his victory at the Cincinnati Masters tournament, Coric defeated Shapovalov 7-5, 6-2 in an action-packed match that lasted an hour and twenty-two minutes. Will Shapovalov be able to control the hot-shot Coric in this quarterfinal match, or will the outcome be the same as in their prior encounters? The Canadian is expected to prevail.
