In mid of 2012, Cyrus was chosen by the selection panel to head the Tata Group and took charge in December that year. In October of 2016, the board of the Tata Group’s holding company, Tata Sons, voted to remove Mistry from the post of chairman because he was not the son of Tata.
Former chairman Ratan Tata then came back as chairman, and Natarajan Chandrasekaran was named as the new chairman a few months later. In December of 2019, the National Company Law Appellate Tribunal, declared the appointment of Chandrasekaran as an executive chairman illegally and restored Mistry.
The Supreme Court stayed NCLAT’s order on 10th January in year 2020. Mistry had filed a cross-appeal in the court, seeking explanations for anomalies in the NCLAT.

Cyrus Pallonji Mistry joined the family construction company, Shapoorji Pallonji and Co. Ltd as a director in year 1991. Mistry served as managing director of Shapoorji Pallonji and Company, which is part of the Shapoorji Pallonji Group, and also chairman of Tata Sons and of the Tata Group.
In an article published in year 2013, The Economist categorized him as “the most prominent industrialist in both India and Britain.” Mistry joined the board of Tata Sons on 1st September in year 2006, a year after his father retired from it. He served as a Director of Tata Limited, from 24th of September in year 1990 to 26th of October in year 2009 and was a Director of Tata Power Co. Ltd until 18 September of 2006.

Cyrus Mistry died unfortunately in a road accident on 4th September at Charoti in Palghar when his Mercedes was returning from Ahmedabad to Mumbai, India. The accident took place on a bridge on the Surya River.
