How has Dunith Wellalage played throughout his professional career?
Dunith Wellalage is a well-known young Sri Lankan international bowler who began his professional career as a cricketer in 2019. After his impressive start in country club cricket, the Sri Lankan Cricket Board included Wellalage in the Sri Lanka Men’s Cricket Team for their ODI against Australia in 2022.
Later, Wellalage made his debut on June 14 at Pallekele against Australia. Currently, the 20-year-old Wellalage is a key player for the national team in both ODI & T20I format. In the 12 ODI games that Wellalage has had the opportunity to play thus far, he has taken 13 wickets while allowing runs at a 5.51 economy rate.
Notably, Wellalage was included in the Sri Lanka Emerging Team to play in England, where he played his first Twenty20 match against Surrey on May 25. He was signed by the Jaffna Kings in July 2022 for the third season of the Lanka Premier League. In July, he was included in Sri Lanka’s Test squad, this time for the country’s domestic series against Pakistan. On July 24, 2022, against Pakistan, he played in his first Test for Sri Lanka. Till now, he has played only one test match and failed to bag any wicket.
