Patrick Haggerty, a homosexual rights campaigner and singer-songwriter for Lavender Country, has passed away at the age of 78. Both the record company Don Giovanni Records and Haggerty family friend Jack Moriarty verified the death.

His band also shared a post on Instagram to inform his fans about his death. The band wrote,

“This morning, we lost a great soul. RIP Patrick Haggerty. After suffering a stroke several weeks ago, he was able to spend his final days at home surrounded by his kids and lifelong husband, JB. Love, and solidarity.”

Who Was Patrick Haggerty?

Patrick Haggerty was a well-known country singer and homosexual rights, campaigner. He has been in the news because he died recently.

He was born on September 27, 1944, in the US. His father’s name was Charles Edward Haggerty who was a dairy farmer, and his mother’s name was Asylda Mary Remillard-Haggerty who was a homemaker. He had 5 siblings reportedly.

His family follows Roman Catholicism, however, he identified himself as an agnostic.

Patrick Haggerty did his schooling at Port Angeles High School where he was selected as head cheerleader in 1959. Later, he did graduate from college. He also did masters in social work. He also joined the Peace Corps but was discharged in 1966 for being gay.

He had a partner named Julius Broughton. He had two children named Amilcar Navarro and Robin Boland, and one grandson named Maxwell Boland.

He died on November 1, 2022. At the time of his death, he was 78 years old.

His Career

Patrick Haggerty advocated for LGBT rights throughout his career and is recognized for producing the first country record with a homosexual theme in the 1970s.

Gay Community Social Services of Seattle provided funding for and assisted in the publishing of Lavender Country’s debut record after the band was founded in 1972. But after his band’s debut record was out, Haggerty took a ten-year hiatus. The band subsequently broke up in 1976.

Years later, the group issued “Lavender Country Revisited,” an EP.

In 2000, the band came back together and gave a performance at Seattle’s Broadway Performance Hall. They then published a full-length album in 2019 with the titles “Blackberry Rose,” “Other Songs,” and “Sorrows.”

Patrick then made an appearance in “Stranger,” a repeat of “I Can’t Shake the Stranger Out of You” by Trixie Mattel, which can be found on her album “Barbara.”

In 2020, he served as the host of the “Aunt Patty’s Lavender Hour” YouTube series, where he interviewed people who had a significant influence on his life and musical career.

Patrick Haggerty unsuccessfully ran for two different political offices in 1976. This includes running as an independent for a seat in the Washington House of Representatives and subsequently one for the Seattle City Council.

Patrick Haggerty reportedly had a stroke in September, according to an earlier report. The iconic singer, who had been hospitalized ever since the stroke, reportedly passed away as a result of complications, according to The Seattle Times. His net worth stands at $1 million.
