Harjinder Kaur’s first snatch attempt at 90 kg ended in failure, but she had successful lifts of 90 kg and 93 kg in her subsequent two attempts to keep herself in contention for a gold. Harjinder Kaur recorded lifts of 113 kg, 116 kg, and 119 kg in the clean and jerk division in her three attempts, but Canadian Alexis Ashworth beat the Indian to the top spot with a lift of 123 kg.

It appeared that Ashworth would be content with bronze and Harjinder would be left out of the competition because England’s Sarah Davies and Nigeria’s Joy Ogbonne Ezze were expected to compete for the gold and silver. The fact that Ogbonne was unable to rank in any of her three attempts and was unable to log a valid clean and jerk propelled the Indian to third place and the bronze medal.

Sarah Davies added to the suspense by losing her first lift but winning the gold on her second attempt. The Englishwoman set a new Commonwealth Games record in the category with a total lift of 229 kg (113 kg + 126 kg). Ashworth won the silver medal by heaving a total of 214 kg (91 kg + 213 kg).

Ajay Singh of India didn’t have the same luck earlier in the day when he came up just one kilogramme short of a bronze medal in the men’s 81kg division. Ajay Singh, a two-time gold medalist at the Commonwealth Championships, placed fourth in his division by snatching 143 kg and clean and jerking 176 kg at the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull.
