Gurdeep Singh increased India’s weightlifting medal total at the 2022 Commonwealth Games to 10 with his bronze on Wednesday in the men’s 109+kg competition. Indian weightlifters improved their medal total from the 2018 Gold Coast Games, which was nine, with the victory.

At the National Exhibition Centre in Solihull, Gurdeep Singh lifted a total of 390 kg (167 kg in the snatch and 223 kg in the clean and jerk) to win the bronze medal. Gurdeep Singh, 26, entered the clean and jerk section in the top five after his lone successful snatch attempt, a 167kg lift. Nooh Dastgir Butt, a Pakistani who won bronze at the 2018 Gold Coast Olympics, led the 11-man field with a 173kg snatch.

The Indian lifted 207 kg in the clean and jerk section on his first try, but the panel ruled that his second lift of 215 kg was improper. Gurdeep Singh, however, successfully performed his final clean and jerk to fight for a top-two finish by lifting 223 kg, a new national record. Later, the gold medal went to Pakistan’s Nooh Dastgir Butt with a weight of 405 kg (173 kg + 232 kg), and the silver went to David Andrew Liti of New Zealand, the 2018 CWG champion, with a weight of 394 kg (170 kg + 224 kg).

The 109+ kg competition was Birmingham 2022’s last weightlifting competition. Three gold, three silver, and four bronze medals were won by Indian weightlifters, with top podium finishes going to Mirabai Chanu (women’s 49 kg), Jeremy Lalrinnunga (men’s 67 kg), and Achinta Sheuli (men’s 73 kg). Other Indian medalists were Sanket Sargar (men’s 55kg silver), Gururaja Poojary (men’s 61kg bronze), Bindyarani Devi (women’s 55kg silver), Harjinder Kaur (women’s 71kg bronze), Vikas Thakur (men’s 96kg silver), Lovepreet Singh (men’s 109kg bronze), and Gurdeep Singh (men’s +109kg bronze).

2022 Commonwealth Games Weightlifting Events Medal Tally

India and the host nation, England, won three gold medals each in the weightlifting discipline at the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Weightlifting contestants from India brought home three gold, three silver, and four bronze medals and will do so with great spirits. The only other weightlifting teams to have won multiple gold medals in the current competition are Canada, Malaysia, and Nigeria.
