Manika Batra and Sreeja Akula dominated their Group 2 preliminary round matches to defeat South Africa and Fiji by identical scores of 3-0 to begin the Indian women’s table tennis team’s defence of the title it won in the Gold Coast four years ago. Achinta Sharath Kamal and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran led India to easy 3-0 victories against Barbados and formidable Singapore in their opening matches of the men’s team competition. The teams have already secured a spot in the quarterfinals.

Sreeja Akula and Reeth Tennison, representing India in the doubles competition, defeated Lailaa Edwards and Danisha Patel, representing South Africa, 11-7, 11-7, and 11-5. As the next player in the singles match, Manika Batra defeated Musfiquh Kalam 11-5, 11-3, and 11-2 before Sreeja Akula defeated Danisha Patel once more 3-0 to end the match.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games’ men’s team table tennis competition will take place at Birmingham, England’s National Exhibition Centre, from July 29 to August 2.
