At the Commonwealth Games, judo has become a staple sport. Prior to recently, it was not included in the Gold Coast edition of 2018 as a core sport. It was previously competed in Auckland 1990, Manchester 2002, and Glasgow 2014. Birmingham 2022 will mark the fourth time it is being competed in.

2022 Commonwealth Games Judo Schedule, Date, Time, And Venue

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, England, will feature judo competitions from August 1–3. Spread across fourteen weight categories, the sport will make its fourth appearance since making its formal debut in 1990 and its second appearance in England specifically. Judo, which had been categorized as an optional sport in the previous three editions, will now be included as a core sport for the first time.

The Coventry Arena in Coventry will host the judo tournaments. There will also be wrestling competitions, and rugby sevens will be held in the nearby Coventry Stadium.

In different weight divisions, Indian judokas have won 5 bronze and 3 silver medals to date in the commonwealth games including medals in 1990, 2002, and 2014. India is currently ranked eighth in the history of judo medals won in the Commonwealth Games. Indian Contingent for 2022 Commonwealth Games Judo Events & Achievements in Judo

Judo first made an appearance in CWG in 1990. James Charles of Wales and Narender Singh both won the bronze medal in the 60 kg weight division. Rajinder Kumar Dhanger and Chris Bacon of Australia won the bronze medal in the then-86kg division, making it not too distant to the next medal. Indian judokas made their mark at the 2002 Commonwealth Games in Manchester after a hiatus of more than ten years. The 60kg weight division saw Akram Shah become the first Indian judoka to win a silver medal.

By winning two silver and two bronze medals in 2014, Indian judokas demonstrated their greatest performance to yet. Navjot Chana, who defeated South Africa’s Daniel le Grange in the semifinal match in the men’s 60 kg weight class, became India’s second silver medallist. Sushila Likmabam defeated Australian Chloe Reiner in the 48 kg semifinals to become the first Indian women judoka to ever win a medal. Kalpana Devi and Rajwinder Kaur won bronze medals in 52 kg and 78 kg, respectively, to join the Sushila’s women’s battle.
