The wait is finally over as the Commonwealth Games 2022, Birmingham will finally open tonight at 11:30 PM(IST). It is the third time that the competition is held in England, with a total of 72 different territories all vying for the podium.

The competition will mark the largest sporting event in the UK’s history following the London 2012 Olympic Games. This year’s competition will feature 280 events in 20 different sports over a two-week period.

What are the Commonwealth Games and why is the U.S. not involved in the biggest sporting event?
Just like the Olympics, the Commonwealth Games are also a multi-sport event that is held every four years, but the participation of nations differentiates the two.
In all, 54 Commonwealth member states are participating in the competition, which also includes 18 other territories who participate independently in the Commonwealth Games under their own flag, with the exception of the Olympic Games.
The Commonwealth Games were first called the Games of the British Empire, and the United States was also part of the Empire in the eighteenth century. The United States gained its independence from Britain in 1776 and has never participated in the Commonwealth Games since its inception.
