Greg Gumbel was 78 years old at the time of his passing. Due to what he claimed at the time were family health concerns, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 in March. After rejoining CBS from NBC in 1998, Gumbel served as the network’s studio host.
In order to continue broadcasting college basketball while renouncing his role as an NFL announcer, Gumbel negotiated an agreement with CBS last year. He became the first Black commentator in the United States to call play-by-play of a major sporting event when he called Super Bowl XXXV for CBS in 2001.
“He leaves behind a legacy of love, inspiration and dedication to over 50 extraordinary years in the sports broadcast industry; and his iconic voice will never be forgotten,” his wife Marcy Gumbel and daughter Michelle Gumbel said in a statement.

Two years later, they welcomed Greg’s younger brother, Bryant and shortly after, the family moved to Chicago’s Hyde Park neighborhood.
Both Greg and Bryant played baseball but liked rival teams, as Greg was a White Sox fan, while Bryant loved the Cubs with both eventually taking up careers in sportsbroadcasting.
Gumbel played baseball while attending Loras College, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in English in 1967. He has a younger brother, Bryant Gumbel, who also sought a career in network television programming, and two sisters, Renee Gumbel-Farrahi and Rhonda Gumbel-Thomas. He had a daughter named Michelle with his wife Marcy.
Marcy Gumbel was born on April 3, 1947 and when she met Greg Gumbel in Detroit, she worked as a nurse while Gumbel worked in hospital supplies. They fell in love and got married in 1973 and after settling in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Greg Gumbel continued as a sports announcer while Marcy took up a new role as his manager.

In 1988, Greg Gumbel started working part-time as an NFL commentator for CBS. Gumbel also started making college basketball announcements in 1989. After CBS lost the NFL and Major League Baseball broadcasting rights, Gumbel transferred to NBC in 1994.
Following the Super Bowl XXXII network broadcast, Gumbel left NBC to rejoin CBS. Serving as the studio host for the network’s coverage of college basketball, including the NCAA men’s basketball tournament, was his first significant assignment. James Brown took Gumbel’s place as studio host of The NFL Today at the conclusion of the 2005 NFL season.
Between 2014 and 2019, Gumbel co-starred with Trent Green on the #3 squad. During the 2018 NFL season, he shared a booth with Green and Bruce Arians. In 2020, Gumbel joined Rich Gannon after trading places with Kevin Harlan. After Gannon’s contract was not renewed by CBS, Gumbel’s companion in the #4 position the next year was Adam Archuleta.
In March, Gumbel missed his first NCAA Tournament since 1997 due to what he said at the time were family health issues while in 2001, he announced Super Bowl XXXV for CBS, becoming the first Black announcer in the U.S. to call play-by-play of a major sports championship.
On March 15, 2023, CBS Sports renewed its deal with Greg Gumbel, allowing him to continue hosting college basketball while taking a break from covering the NFL. Gumbel missed 2024’s March Madness coverage, though, because of family health concerns.
