Sainz drove for Carlin in the British and European Formula 3 championships in 2012. Before joining Toro Rosso in F1, he raced for DAMS in the 2014 Formula Renault 3.5 season, winning the title. For the 2019 season, Sainz switched to McLaren after his contract with Red Bull Racing expired. With a third-place result at the 2019 Brazilian Grand Prix, Sainz earned his first Formula One podium.
