PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, defeated World No. 1 Akane Yamaguchi in the Super 500 tournament in Bangkok on Friday. Former finalists won a hard-fought match in 51 minutes, defeating the Japanese star 21-15, 20-22, 21-13.
Yamaguchi, who had earlier this year defeated Sindhu at the Asian Badminton Championships, forced a deciding following a strong fightback in the second game, but Sindhu raced ahead in the decider as Yamaguchi showed signs of back strain.
Sindhu will meet Chen Yufein, the reigning Olympic champion, in the semi-final. Sindhu has a 6-4 record versus the Chinese shuttler, who has been in excellent form recently.
