The Singapore Open 2022, often referred to as the Singapore Badminton Open 2022, kicked-off on July 12 and will culminate on July 17 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium in Singapore. The Singapore Open has a $370,000 prize pool with the winner of each event eligible for a hefty share of the prize money. Hence, all finals scheduled on Sunday will bear big importance for players.

In her matchup with Saena Kawakami in the last four, PV Sindhu, who is ranked seventh in the world in badminton, defeated Kawakami 21-15, 21-7. In the final on Sunday, Chinese shuttler Wang Zhi Yi, who defeated Japan’s Aya Ohori in the other semifinal will take on PV Sindhu. After going on to win the Syed Modi International and Swiss Open BWF Super 300 titles in January and March, respectively, it will be the Tokyo bronze medalist’s third summit match of 2022. However, the Singapore meet is a Super 500 competition.

PV Sindhu, a two-time Olympic medalist, dominated the opening exchanges of the game and quickly built a 7-2 advantage over her Japanese opponent. Kawakami, who defeated Thai ace Pornpawee Chochuwong in the quarterfinals after receiving a walkover from top seed Tai Tzu Ying in the second round, rallied back to tie the match at 11-11. But just when it appeared that the Japanese player had the upper hand, PV Sindhu stepped up her game, scoring five of the set’s final six points to win.

In the second game, PV Sindhu established herself quickly and went into the break with a commanding 11-4 lead. Even after the game was restarted, PV Sindhu maintained control of the situation despite her Japanese opponent’s sporadic showy victories. In the end, Sindhu easily won the match in 31 minutes.
