In the opening round of men’s singles, gold medalist at the Commonwealth Games Parupalli Kashyap defeated Heo Kwang Hee of South Korea in straight sets with a score of 21-12, 21-17. Lee Zii Jia had a flawless start to his competition as the in-form men’s singles player barely broke a sweat when he defeated Ireland’s Nhat Nguyen 21-15, 21-11 at the Axiata Arena. Shesar Hiren Rhustavito of Indonesia will be Zii Jia’s opponent in the second round of Malaysia Open.

Ng Tze Yong, Zii Jia’s stand-in at the Birmingham Commonwealth Games later this month, failed to emulate his countryman. Despite his best efforts, Malaysia’s world No. 48, who was unexpectedly advanced to the main draw, was unable to defeat China’s Lu Guang Zu, who won 21-16, 21-23, and 21-18.

World No. 2 Kento Momota, another well-known athlete, also advanced to the second round. The Japanese ace, who has been in poor form ever since a near-fatal accident in 2020, didn’t even lift his racquet as Kantaphon Wancharoen of Thailand gave him a first-round walkover.
