On a disastrous Thursday for Malaysian athletes, Liew Daren and Ng Tze Yong were also ousted in round two of the Malaysia Open. Local star Lee Zii Jia, the Asian badminton champion, fell to Indonesia’s Shesar Hiren Rhustavito 19-21, 21-19, 16-21. Momota Kento, a former World No. 1 from Japan, was Zii Jia’s opponent in the quarterfinals, but she needs to conduct some soul-searching.

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting and Jonatan Christie, both from Indonesia also advanced to the second round of Malaysia Open. Ginting defeated Sitthikom Thammasin of Thailand 21-18, 21-18 to arrange a meeting with Viktor Axelsen. Lee Cheuk Yiu had to put up more of a fight than expected in order for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion to defeat him 15-21, 21-6, 21-13.

The biggest upset of the day was recorded by unseeded Prannoy, who went undefeated during India’s historic Thomas Cup victory this year. He defeated world No. 4 Chou Tien Chen of Chinese Taipei in straight sets with a score of 21-15 21-7 in a match that lasted more than 30 minutes.

Points Award System

The BWF scoring system was used to calculate the points distribution for each round of the BWF World Tour Super 750 competition. Men’s singles champions receive 11,000 BWF points, while runners-up receive 9,300 BWF points.
