Lakshya Sen and Kidambi Srikanth, the top-ranked men’s singles players in India, will not compete in the Malaysia Masters this year, similar to their absence from the Malaysia Open. The men’s singles draw will be headed by HS Prannoy. This year, Prannoy has been in excellent form; most recently, he advanced to the semifinals of the Indonesia Open and the quarterfinals of the Malaysia Open. He is paired in the same bracket as World No. 2 Kento Momota and seventh-seeded Jonatan Christie, who he lost to in the Malaysia Open quarterfinals. Prannoy will launch his campaign against Shesar Rhustavito of Indonesia.

Sameer Verma and Sai Praneeth are the other Indian men’s singles competitors in the competition. In the same initial bracket as world number one Viktor Axelsen is Sai Praneeth. In the opening round, Praneeth will compete against Kevin Cordon of Gautemala. Sai Praneeth is in a different bracket and will face Chou Tien-chen, the fourth-ranked player in the world, in the first round.

The Malaysia Masters this week will disappoint fans who were hoping to see their heroes. Several notable figures, including Lee Zii Jia, won’t be present. Also anticipated to skip the Super 500 competition is world No. 1 Viktor Axelsen. According to a source, Zii Jia, who lost in the shocking second round of the Malaysia Open, has informed his sponsors that he will not be playing in the Malaysia Masters. He recently made news when he said he wouldn’t be competing in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham later this month.
