The fifth seed shuttler Carolina Marin, Spain’s Rio 2016 champion, lost to China’s Asian gold medalist Wang Zhiyi 21-17, 21-18 in the Istora Gelora Bung Karno.
Wang has advanced to the quarterfinals, where she will face top seed and defending world champion Akane Yamaguchi, who defeated Sayaka Takahashi in an all-Japanese match today. Yamaguchi had a 21-11, 5-1 advantage when her opponent retired. Chen Yufei, the Tokyo 2020 Olympic champion, required three games to defeat Chinese compatriot Zhang Yiman and go to the quarterfinals. Chen finally won 21-10, 15-21, and 21-12.
Tai Tzu-ying of Chinese Taipei, who Chen defeated in the Tokyo 2020 final, came from behind to defeat Iris Wang of the United States, 15-21, 21-16, 21-9. Meanwhile, An Se-young of South Korea, the defending Indonesia Open champion, defeated Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour 21-14, 21-11.
