Axelsen, the reigning Olympic champion, lost a game to Indonesia’s Anthony Sinisuka Ginting but still beat the local favorite with a score of 21-13, 18-21, 21-9. Meanwhile, Lee, the world number five, was pushed to the limit by Singapore’s defending world champion Loh Kean Yew in a hard-fought bout. Both players were given the opportunity to win the match, but the Malaysian won 21-18, 16-21, 22-20. On Saturday, Lee will face Axelsen for a position in the final on Sunday.

HS Prannoy, one of India’s Thomas Cup heroes, maintained his winning ways in Jakarta on Friday, defeating Denmark’s Rasmus Gemke in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Indonesia Open. The 29-year-old Kerala native defeated Gemke 21-14, 21-12.
